About this book
The story
Before calculators, a Victorian engineer laying out a railway cutting or sizing a culvert reached for a book like this: a dense, thumb-worn compendium of tables, rules and worked methods. John Cresson Trautwine, an American civil engineer, first published his pocket-book in 1872, and it became a standard field reference, revised through many editions. As the title promises, it ranges across mensuration, trigonometry, surveying and hydraulics, and further still.
This is a modern reprint of a public domain edition, so expect the look and limits of a facsimile rather than a newly edited text. It belongs with historians of engineering, collectors of old technical books, and anyone curious how bridges, canals and railways were worked out with pencil, paper and a very good set of tables.
