A Senate candidate, a girl silenced in 1960, and a secret kept for sixty-five years.
Reading guide
As the fourth and final Sylvia Jensen mystery, it draws on the history built up across the earlier books, so following the series from the beginning gives Sylvia and J.B.'s relationship its full weight.
Sylvia's collapse sets the investigation in motion. J.B. pieces together the silence and rumour surrounding Jordane, Sylvia insists there is more to the story, and the two are drawn toward a reckoning with what happened in 1960.

Description

In 1960, Sylvia Jensen is a naïve seventeen-year-old in a small midwestern town when Anthony Jordane, the state wrestling champion and local hero, tries to rape her. In 2025 he is running for the U.S. Senate. When Sylvia learns his campaign has strong indigenous support, the shock sends her into cardiac arrest. Her old friend J.B. Harrell, an investigative reporter whose bond with her spans decades, becomes certain that terrible things involving Jordane happened long ago, and that Sylvia believes she was responsible for them.

J.B. works through a tangle of silence and speculation to find the truth, and has to decide what to do with what he uncovers while his loyalties pull in different directions. Sylvia, meanwhile, is determined to prove what really happened. The publisher describes this as the fourth and final Sylvia Jensen mystery, a story about how early trauma shapes a life and how remembering and acting can turn pain into justice.
