Reading guide
Start here. This is the first North Country novel, and it introduces the setting and the main characters.
The novel follows Nicole Durham, who takes a cleaning job at Mikko Helle's new house, and Investigator Tim Wellington, who is called in after bones are found in the basement. The celebrity athlete, the local and the thief each have something to hide.

Description

It is almost summer in Cape Vincent, a remote peninsula in New York's Thousand Islands, and former ice hockey star Mikko Helle has arrived to move into a lavishly renovated waterfront house. He is thirty, wealthy and a stranger to the town, and nobody quite knows what to make of him. Nicole Durham, a local mother of two, works her connections to become his cleaner. The money matters, but she also has a secret to expose and not much time to do it.

When Nicole disturbs an intruder during a clean, State Police Investigator Tim Wellington is drawn into the mansion and finds the bones of an unidentified young woman deep in its basement. The newcomer, the local and the thief all have something to hide, and one of them knows who the killer is. This is the first North Country novel, and it will suit readers who enjoy a tight circle of suspects, small-town tensions and a mystery that keeps its cards close to its chest.
