Carrie

Prom night, and a gift nobody in Chamberlain saw coming.
Reading guide
This is a standalone novel, so there is no order to follow. Start with the opening pages, where the fragmented documents set up the tragedy before the story moves back to Carrie's life.
The narrative follows Carrie White from her humiliating life in Chamberlain, Maine, through her invitation to the prom, to the events of that night. The interspersed documents reveal the aftermath as the story draws closer to the climax.

Description

Carrie White is friendless, mocked by her classmates in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, and given no refuge at home by her fiercely religious mother. Nobody yet knows that Carrie can move things with her mind, and the power is growing. When Tommy Ross asks her to the prom, it seems like the first sign that her life might finally change.

Stephen King's first novel, published in 1974, is told partly in fragments: newspaper cuttings, witness statements and scientific reports set between the narrative. The shop description notes that you know from the start that something terrible has happened, and the book steadily draws you towards it. The publisher's blurb calls it King's legendary debut. It is lean, angry and sympathetic to a girl pushed too far, and it suits readers who remember how cruel school could be.
