About this book

The story

Carrie White is friendless, mocked by her classmates in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, and given no refuge at home by her fiercely religious mother. What nobody yet understands is that Carrie can move things with her mind, and the power is growing. When Tommy Ross asks her to the prom, it looks like the first sign that her life might finally change.

Stephen King's first novel, published in 1974, tells its story partly in fragments: newspaper cuttings, witness statements and scientific reports set between the narrative, so you know from the start that something terrible happened and watch it draw steadily closer. It is lean, angry and full of sympathy for a girl pushed too far. A short, sharp horror classic for anyone who remembers how cruel school could be.
