Black Forest Souvenirs: Collected in Northern Pennsylvania (Metalmark)

Seventeenth-century French power, in the letters of the men who ran it.
Reading guide
This is a single volume with no sequel. Read it from the opening Mazarin and d'Aumont correspondence through to the selected letters that follow it.
The book is a collection of letters rather than a narrative, so it has no story arc. It moves from the exchange between Mazarin and d'Aumont to a selection of letters written to d'Aumont by his other correspondents.

Description

This volume brings together the correspondence between Cardinal Mazarin, chief minister to the young Louis XIV, and Antoine d'Aumont, Marshal of France. It is followed by a selection of letters written to d'Aumont by the King, the Queen Regent, Gaston d'Orléans, Le Tellier and Louvois, and, as the title notes, by Oliver Cromwell.

The text is in French and reproduced in facsimile from an original library copy, so readers can expect library stamps, original copyright notices and the texture of a historical document, along with the occasional blurred page. It suits anyone interested in how France was governed and how its armies were run in the age of Mazarin.
