About this book
The story
Dr Louis Creed moves his family from Chicago to an old, rambling house in rural Maine, the kind of unsmart, comfortable place where children can grow up exploring fields and woods. The only shadow is the highway out front, where heavy trucks grind through their gears and hammer down the long hills.
Behind the house, a cleared path leads into the woods, to the spot where generations of local children have carried their pets for burial. It seems a sad place but a harmless one, until it starts to seep into Louis's dreams. King builds the dread slowly, letting the ordinary warmth of family life sharpen everything that follows, and the question at the book's heart, what grief might drive a loving parent to do, lingers long after the last page. Choose this one if you like your horror quiet, patient and deeply unsettling.
