# Witchcraft for Wayward Girls

Set in 1970 at Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, a home where families hide pregnant daughters until their babies are born, adopted out and forgotten. Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives frightened and alone, and finds a dozen girls in the same position, including Rose, who means to keep her baby, Zinnia, who plans to marry the baby's father, and Holly, barely fourteen and silent. Their days are controlled by adults who insist they know best.

Grady Hendrix, author of How to Sell a Haunted House, writes this Southern Gothic horror with anger at the way girls were denied any say over their own lives. Nightfire published it in 2025, and it reached the Sunday Times bestseller list. Readers who like their horror tender, angry and unsettling will enjoy it.
