Where Are the Kings

A boy grows up in a crowded, loving, difficult family after a loss that cannot be undone.
Reading guide
This is a standalone novel, so there is no series order to follow. Simply begin at the first page with Jack and his bike on the hill.
Twelve-year-old Jack's life changes in an instant when he chases his mother's car down a hill. He must then navigate adolescence while his extended family, with its own secrets and tensions, tries to show him what it means to become a man.

Description

Where Are the Kings is a standalone novel by Donal Ryan, the Orwell Prize for Fiction winner, and it opens with a moment that changes everything. Twelve-year-old Jack races down a hill on his bike after his mother's car, desperate to reach her before it gets to the lake. What happens next cannot be undone, and he must face the confusing passage from boyhood towards manhood without the person who kept him steady.

Jack is surrounded by family, though, and the novel is as much about that crowd as about his loss. His fiercely loving Nana, his volatile Grandad, his earthy uncles Haulie and Theo with their lessons in manhood, the resentful JJ and his beautiful aunt Rose all press in on him. The publisher's blurb asks how a boy with so many questions, in a family with so many secrets, can understand who he is becoming.
