The temperature at which books burn - and the fire of resistance ignites.
Reading guide
Fahrenheit 451 is a stand-alone novel and can be read independently. There are no prequels or sequels required to enjoy the full story.
Guy Montag begins as a loyal fireman who takes pleasure in burning books and the homes that hide them. A string of unsettling encounters - first with a question-asking teen, then with a suicidal wife absorbed in mindless media, and later with a book-loving professor - awakens his dormant curiosity. He shifts from enforcer to rebel, secretly reading and eventually fleeing the city after a confrontation with his fire chief. The novel concludes with Montag finding an underground community of intellectuals who memorize books, waiting for a day when the written word will be needed again, ending on a note of cautious hope for a rebirth of civilization.
