# Traditional and Analytical Philosophy: Lectures on the Philosophy of Language

Ernst Tugendhat began his philosophical training in the phenomenological and hermeneutical tradition associated with Heidegger, but came to think that philosophy is best practised analytically, through close attention to language. These lectures grew from that change of view. First published in German in 1976, they were translated into English in 1982, and this Cambridge University Press edition appeared in 2016.

The lectures apply the methods of linguistic analysis to some of the central and long-standing questions of metaphysics and the philosophy of language. The vantage point is distinctive: a thinker who knew the continental tradition from within tests its concerns against analytical rigour, which suits students and readers interested in how these two strands of modern philosophy relate.
