# Tidelands

Set in 1648, as civil war divides King and Parliament, Tidelands follows Alinor, a poor woman who knows the marshes of the south coast better than anyone. She is descended from wise women and skilled with herbs, and her talents set her apart in a village quick to suspect difference.

Philippa Gregory's first Fairmile novel begins on Midsummer's Eve, when Alinor waits in a graveyard for a ghost who might free her from her abusive husband. Instead she meets James, a young man on the run, and leads him along the secret paths across the marsh. The book gives close attention to the tidal landscape and to ordinary lives lived beside it, and it suits readers drawn to the overlooked women of English history.
