# Thud!

Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch has a murder to solve in Ankh-Morpork, where an old grudge between dwarfs and trolls, dating back to the battle of Koom Valley, is close to boiling over. With the anniversary approaching and a prominent dwarf found dead, the case lands on a city already on the edge of open war. Vimes also has a vampire recruit he did not ask for, and a firm promise to be home by six each evening to read *Where's My Cow?* to his young son.

Pratchett uses the whodunnit to think hard about prejudice, history and the stories people tell about one another, and still finds room for jokes on almost every page. It is the seventh book following the Watch on the Discworld, and it suits anyone who likes their fantasy funny, humane and quietly angry.
