Thud!

A murder, an ancient grudge and a city on the edge of war
Reading guide
Thud! is the seventh book following the City Watch, so the earlier Watch novels, starting with Guards! Guards!, give the characters their backstory and are best read in publication order.
Commander Sam Vimes is handed the murder of a prominent dwarf just as the anniversary of the Koom Valley battle approaches and tensions in Ankh-Morpork rise. Alongside the investigation he has to cope with a vampire recruit to the Watch and his own promise to be home for bedtime stories.

Description

Koom Valley is the battle where dwarfs and trolls ambushed each other, and in Ankh-Morpork the old grudge has never quite cooled. As the anniversary approaches and a prominent dwarf is found dead, Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch has a murder to solve and a city teetering on open war. He also has a vampire recruit he never asked for, and an unbreakable promise to be home by six every evening to read Where's My Cow? to his young son.

This is the seventh book following the Watch, and Pratchett is at his sharpest here. The whodunnit becomes a way to think hard about prejudice, history and the stories peoples tell about each other, and there are jokes on every page. It will suit anyone who likes their fantasy funny, humane and quietly angry.
