# The Summer Hikaru Died, Vol. 8

Mokumokuren's manga is set in a rural village over a summer that grows steadily more uneasy. In this eighth volume, the figure wearing Hikaru's face finds itself stranded on the far side of the hole it has just sealed. Its one wish is to return and keep the promise Yoshiki asked of it. A way back does open, though the cost is felt before it is explained.

Back in the village, the mark on Yoshiki's body keeps spreading, and Kurebayashi, worried for him, offers to close the next hole himself. Someone else seems to be working towards ends of their own. The book leans on the bond between the two boys, where the dread lies as much in their tender, uneasy devotion to each other as in whatever waits in the dark.
