The Summer Hikaru Died, Vol. 8

Summer dread and a promise that will not let go.
Reading guide
This is volume 8 and picks up directly after the hole is sealed, so it is best read after the earlier volumes.
The volume follows the creature wearing Hikaru's face as it tries to return to Yoshiki, the cost of the way home it finds, and the growing mark on Yoshiki's body. Kurebayashi offers to close the next hole, and someone else's motives begin to surface.

Description

Having sealed the hole, the thing wearing Hikaru's face finds itself stranded on the other side, and all it wants is to get back and keep the one promise Yoshiki ever asked of it. A way home does open up, though the book makes sure readers feel the price before they understand it.

Back in the village, the mark on Yoshiki's body keeps spreading, and Kurebayashi, worried for him, offers to close the next hole herself, while someone else seems to be working quietly towards ends of their own. This eighth volume keeps the mix of rural summer dread and tender, uneasy devotion, with the horror sitting as much in what the two boys mean to each other as in what waits in the dark.
