# The Shining

Stephen King's novel follows Jack Torrance, a former teacher and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He brings his wife Wendy and their five-year-old son Danny, and once the snow closes the roads, the family are left alone in the building for months. Danny has a gift he calls the shining, and the hotel has a long and troubling past.

King builds the unease slowly, through cabin fever, a strained marriage and a father's love curdling into something else. It is regarded as one of King's masterpieces, and this edition includes a new introduction by Owen King.
