# The Season

Helen Garner spends one football season in Melbourne following her youngest grandson's under-16s team. She goes to almost every game and training session, shivering on the sidelines at dusk, and she describes herself as a passionate Western Bulldogs fan with an imperfect grasp of the rules. The book is a record of the season they spend together before he grows into a man.

Garner's writing moves between the boys learning grit and grace and her fear for her grandson in the scrum, while the team fights for a place in the finals. Her views on masculinity and team spirit are candid and dryly funny. It will speak to anyone who has stood in the cold watching someone they love play.
