The Rosie Project

Love isn't an exact science, but no one told Don Tillman.
Reading guide
The Rosie Project works fully as a standalone and is the place to start. Its sequel, The Rosie Effect, continues the story of Don and Rosie.
Don sets out to find a suitable partner through a carefully designed scientific test. Rosie arrives with an urgent project of her own, and her presence unsettles his carefully ordered life, prompting him to rethink what he thinks he needs.

Description

Don Tillman is a thirty-nine-year-old genetics professor in Melbourne who has never had a second date. Being a scientist, he treats the problem as a research project: the Wife Project, a detailed questionnaire designed to screen out smokers, drinkers, the unpunctual and anyone else unsuitable. Then Rosie walks into his office, failing nearly every criterion, with a project of her own. She wants to find her biological father, and a geneticist could be very useful.

The novel is told in Don's voice, which is precise, literal and entirely earnest, and much of the comedy comes from the gap between what he notices and what he misses. Beneath the laughs is a tender story about routine, difference and the slow work of letting someone in. It is a warm, funny romance for readers who like their love stories clever and a little unconventional.
