# The Red Queen

Philippa Gregory's novel follows Margaret Beaufort, who was married to Edmund Tudor as a child and widowed in her early teens. Left with one son and a settled belief that he should be King of England, she slips into the house of York as a loyal friend and servant, working quietly for a Tudor triumph. Her unlikely ally is the dowager queen, Elizabeth Woodville.

The book shows the Wars of the Roses through a woman more often remembered as stern and pious, bringing her ambition, faith and patience up close. Its concerns are divided loyalties and very long games, and it will suit readers who like their history told through the women who shaped it.
