# The loneliness of Sonia and Sunny

Kiran Desai's novel begins with two young people who meet on an overnight train in India and feel an immediate pull. Their grandparents once tried to match them, and that clumsy meddling drove them apart, which makes the new attraction awkward. Sonia is an aspiring novelist back from her studies in snowy Vermont, fearing she is haunted by an artist she once turned to. Sunny is a struggling journalist in New York, trying to escape his imperious mother and the violence of his warring clan.

Desai, who won the Booker Prize for The Inheritance of Loss, wrote this long novel, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2025. It moves across continents and years, taking in country, class, race, history and the bonds between generations. Readers who like a big, thoughtful book will find plenty of room to settle in.
