The Last Witch

Innsbruck, 1485: a wealthy wife accused of murder and witchcraft, and a prison cell where the danger may not be entirely human.
Reading guide
The Last Witch is a standalone novel, so there is no order to follow and you can start with it straight away.
Helena, a wealthy young wife in Innsbruck in 1485, is accused of killing her family's footman and then of witchcraft. Imprisoned with six other women, she faces a witchfinder while the prisoners' attempt to escape with a cursed totem brings a malevolent spirit into their midst.

Description

Innsbruck, 1485. Helena has a household to run and children expected of her, until the family's footman is found dead and she is accused of killing him. The charge soon becomes a graver one: witchcraft. Locked in a cell with six other women, she faces a witchfinder whose verdict could send her to the stake.

C. J. Cooke builds the dread on two fronts. Inside the prison, a cursed witch totem is smuggled in, and the women's desperate plan to use it to escape unleashes a malevolent spirit. Outside, the cold machinery of the trial closes in. This is historical horror for readers who like their nights long and their candles burning low.
