# The Lady of the Rivers: Cousins' War 3

Philippa Gregory's Cousins' War novels centre on women at the heart of the Wars of the Roses. The Lady of the Rivers, the third, opens in Rouen in 1435, where Jacquetta of Luxembourg is a wealthy widow after the Duke of Bedford's death. Her only friend in his household is his squire, Richard Woodville. They become lovers, marry in secret and return to the Lancastrian court, where Jacquetta grows close to Margaret, the young queen of Henry VI.

The novel shows a kingdom coming apart: a king who falls into a mysterious sleep, a queen who relies on untrustworthy favourites, and Richard, Duke of York, pressing his rival family's claim. Jacquetta fights for those she loves, including her daughter Elizabeth Woodville, whose extraordinary future she can already sense.
