The Curiosity Box: The Seashore

Pick up each find, look closely and wonder why nature made it that way.
Reading guide
This is a standalone title, so there is no order to follow. Children can read it straight through or dip into the habitats that interest them most.
The book takes readers along the coast, habitat by habitat, introducing the plants, animals and objects found there. Along the way it pairs photographs and illustrations with simple science that prompts children to look more closely and ask why.

Description

A sand lizard tucked into the dunes, a scatter of shells and a crab sidling across wet rock: Peter D. Riley lays out the seashore like the contents of a curiosity box. Young readers are invited to pick up each find, look closely and start asking how and why nature designs things as it does.

The book moves through the different coastal habitats, introducing the plants, animals and objects to be found there, from crustaceans to seabirds. Full-colour photographs sit alongside illustrations, giving plenty of detail while still feeling more like discovery than a lesson, though there is real science on every page. It is a good one to pack before a trip to the beach.
