# Journalism and the Periodical Press in Nineteenth-Century Britain

Published by Cambridge University Press in 2019 and edited by Joanne Shattock, this collection gathers newly commissioned essays on the newspaper and periodical press in nineteenth-century Britain. It covers the period's formats, from weighty reviews to magazines and daily papers, and includes accounts of individual journalists, many of them eminent writers of their day. A recurring thread is the tension between journalism, then a new profession, and authorship, which was redefining itself at the same time.

Later essays turn to technology, the telegraph, the typewriter and new processes of illustration, and to the British press's reach around the world. It also considers how digitised archives open new lines of research. It suits students, scholars and anyone curious about Victorian print culture.
