# Genes, Determinism and God

Denis Alexander's book examines the long argument between nature and nurture, a debate that has swung back and forth for centuries, often driven by ideology. He traces how developmental biology, genomics, epigenetics and research into neuronal plasticity have weakened the idea that the two are opposed. He also considers behavioural genetics, which reports heritability for traits such as religiosity and political affiliation.

From there he turns to human freedom, moral responsibility, the legal system and religious belief. His conclusion is that genuine free will, often shaped by genetic variation, follows from an integrated picture of the human person drawn from contemporary biology. It will suit readers who suspect we are more than our DNA.
