# First One to Die

DCI Matilda Darke is a Sheffield detective, and in *First One to Die* a phone call sets a murder in motion that lands uncomfortably close to home. She and her team must solve a case that seems built to test them, with an unsettling sense that this first death may not be the last. Michael Wood writes a police procedural with a dark edge, suited to readers who like their investigations tense.

Crime writer Elly Griffiths has praised Matilda as a heroine. HarperCollins UK published the book in 2026, and it sits in fiction, with the investigation and the team's work at its centre.
