# Face Boss: The Memoir of a Western Kentucky Coal Miner

Michael D. Guillerman spent nearly eighteen years underground at the Peabody Coal Company's Camp No. 2 mine in Union County, Kentucky, rising from belt shoveler to salaried section foreman, the face boss of the title. He wrote the memoir because of the misconceptions he saw in media coverage of the 2006 Sago mine disaster.

Guillerman is frank about methane ignitions, mine fires, squeezes, injuries, strikes and layoffs, yet he writes just as warmly about the camaraderie underground and the pride of bringing out hundreds of tons of coal a day. He also takes up race relations within mining culture and the growing number of women in the industry, making this an honest and often funny insider's account of working lives in the American coalfields.
