# Does God Suffer?

Thomas G. Weinandy's study, published by the University of Notre Dame in 2000, asks whether a view now widely held among theologians can be reconciled with the traditional Christian understanding of God. That view holds that God suffers within his divine nature, in love and solidarity with those who suffer, and it gained fresh urgency after the Holocaust. Weinandy takes the consensus seriously before testing it against the classical view.

The book is a careful work of historical and systematic theology. Weinandy traces how the Church has thought about God and suffering, and defends the classical view at length without making light of the evil and sin that prompted the modern turn. It suits students of doctrine, clergy and thoughtful lay readers working through how a loving God relates to a suffering world.
