# Dawnlands

Set in 1685, when England is split over the Catholic King James, this novel by Philippa Gregory follows Ned Ferryman, who returns from America with his Pokanoket servant to fight for the Duke of Monmouth. He finds an unexpected love along the way. At court, Livia draws her son Matthew and his foster mothers, Alinor and Alys, into a plot to protect the queen.

Matthew is rewarded with the Manor of Foulmire, on the tidelands where the family once struggled to get by, so Alinor becomes lady of the manor as the rebellion nears its last battle. The story ranges from London palaces to the Sussex marshes and Barbados, following families caught between loyalty and ambition.
