Dark Tides

Three cities, one buried secret, and a claim that may be a lie.
Reading guide
Dark Tides is the second Fairmile novel and follows on from Tidelands, the first book in the series, so the family story carries straight on from there.
On Midsummer Eve, 1670, a wealthy London man waits to meet the woman he failed decades earlier, believing she holds the son he needs as his heir. In New England, her brother searches in vain for justice, and in Venice a widow arrives with news that the son has drowned and a claim that raises doubts about her identity.

Description

Midsummer Eve, 1670. A wealthy man waits outside a poor London warehouse for Alinor, the woman he failed twenty-one years earlier. He has money, land and status to offer, but he believes she holds the one thing he cannot buy: his son and heir. Across the Atlantic, Alinor's brother Ned finds no justice in New England, where the King's revenge turns settlers against each other and against the American Indians.

Then Livia arrives from Venice, a beautiful widow who claims Alinor as her mother-in-law and brings word that Alinor's son Rob has drowned in the lagoon. Is she telling the truth, or is she an imposter? The book moves between London, Venice and New England in the uneasy years of Charles II's reign. It is the second Fairmile novel, and the publisher presents it as a continuation of the Tidelands family's rise.
