# Carrie

Stephen King's debut novel follows Carrie White, a lonely teenager in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, who is mocked by her classmates and offered little comfort at home by her fiercely religious mother. Carrie has a gift she does not yet understand: she can move objects with her mind, and that power is growing. When Tommy Ross invites her to the prom, it seems a first step towards a better life.

Published in 1974, the novel is told through fragments, including newspaper cuttings, witness statements and scientific reports, so the reader knows early that something terrible has happened and watches it draw closer. It is lean, angry and sympathetic towards a girl pushed too far, and it will suit readers who remember how cruel school could be.
