# Carrie

Carrie White is sixteen, painfully shy and the easy target of her classmates at a small-town Maine school. At home, her mother's fierce religion offers no comfort, and nobody notices the strange gift Carrie has: she can move things with her mind. After a cruel prank in the locker room, an unexpected invitation to the prom lets years of pressure find an outlet.

Stephen King's first novel is told in fragments, woven with news reports, interviews and testimony gathered after the event, so dread builds from the opening pages. It is short, raw and furious, and it still lands hard half a century on. It suits anyone who has ever felt cast out, and readers curious about where King's long career began.
