# By Your Side

Linda Standish has spent thirty-three years at the council's Unclaimed Heirs Unit, looking after people whom no one else has come forward for, and she is looking forward to an early retirement. First, though, comes one last case. Levi Norman, a Welshman, spent the final five years of his life on Storrich, a remote Scottish island, and Linda must track down his relatives and work out what brought him there.

She makes the journey by hearse, in the company of her arch nemesis, and the islanders prove as much hindrance as help. Ruth Jones, the BAFTA-winning co-writer of Gavin and Stacey, brings her ear for comedy and kindness to a story about community and second chances. As Linda pieces together a life now gone, she makes new friends and learns things about herself she never knew. It is a warm, funny novel that is also moving.
