# Blood Meridian

Blood Meridian follows a fourteen-year-old runaway from Tennessee, known as the Kid, who drifts into the violent borderlands between Texas and Mexico in the nineteenth century. He is taken up by the Glanton gang, scalp hunters who prey on Indigenous Americans. Their violence is presided over by Judge Holden, a huge, hairless and learned man. The gang is itself hunted, which gives the chaos a pattern of its own.

McCarthy's prose moves between spare and ornate, at times almost scriptural, and it carries scenes of brutal violence across a desert described with stark beauty. The novel works as both a Western and a challenge to that form. It is best suited to readers who can tolerate graphic violence and want a demanding, dark book.
