Animal Farm

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
Reading guide
Animal Farm is a standalone book, so there is no order to follow and no prior reading is needed.
The animals of Manor Farm, weary of the drunken and careless Farmer Jones, are inspired by the old boar Old Major's talk of a society without masters. They drive Jones out and take control of the farm, and at first equality seems possible. As the pigs begin to compete for power, the new leadership starts to resemble the regime it replaced.

Description

When Farmer Jones leaves the animals of Manor Farm neglected and at the mercy of his drink, the old boar Old Major offers them a vision of a life without masters. They take him at his word, drive Jones out and run the farm themselves, and for a while equality seems within reach.

Orwell's fable was published just after the Second World War and was an immediate success. Its plain, nursery-tale telling gives it real bite. It is short enough to read in an evening and sharp enough to stay with you for years, and it will appeal to anyone who has watched fine principles bend in the hands of those who hold power.
