The coconut shell has a single narrow slot cut into the outside.The monkey reaches through the narrow slot and grabs the tempting ball of rice. To grab the ball of rice inside the coconut shell, he must make a fist around the rice with his tiny hand. His hand in the form of a fist, can no longer be pulled out through the slot without releasing the rice. The slot is too narrow for his fist holding rice to pass back through. The monkey cannot re-consider the value of rice to him in changed circumstances, then take the right action to avoid the approaching outcome.
