Breath of Africa

Thirty years of Kenya's recent history, seen through two very different lives. Caroline grows up privileged in the fertile highlands, while Charles Ondiek labours on a farm and dreams of an Oxford education. When Charles falls for Teresa, daughter of a hated settler farmer, he draws the attention of Mwangi, a Mau Mau oath administrator held in detention for six years.

Once released, Mwangi forces Charles and Teresa apart and turns on Caroline, who proves to have more inner strength than he expects. Her search with Charles for a mysterious ancestral cave carries the story into Kenya's beautiful, hostile desert, and towards a question she cannot easily settle: whether she will ever truly belong in the country she loves. A novel for those who like their history told through love, fear and the pull of home.
