About this book
The story
Katie Fisher is eighteen and Amish, raised in a community that keeps the modern world at arm's length and treats leaving as losing everything: church, home and family. When a baby arrives in the middle of the night, she does what she has always done in a crisis and prays. She falls asleep exhausted, wakes to find the child gone, and takes it as an answer. Then the baby's body is found, and faith is no longer enough.
Jodi Picoult builds the story around a hard collision between a closed, devout way of life and the demands of the law, and she refuses easy verdicts. The questions she raises about truth, justice and what love costs are argued from several sides. For anyone who likes a moral dilemma with real weight behind it, and a story that keeps you turning over right and wrong long after the last chapter.
