The story
Across the Golden Vale of County Tipperary, the railway has been thinning for decades, and Barry Carse was there with a camera. Drawing mainly on his collection, with pictures from other contributors, he and Jonathan Beaumont follow the old Waterford, Limerick & Western main line from Limerick to Waterford, from 1960 onwards, as services declined and the network changed.
The branches get their due too: the Nenagh line from Limerick to Ballybrophy, the short Killaloe branch on the shores of Lough Derg, the former Cashel branch and the route from Thurles to Clonmel, plus the stretch of the Dublin to Cork main line through Thurles to Limerick Junction. Locomotives, carriages and freight traffic of the period all appear against quiet rural country. A fine one for Irish railway enthusiasts and anyone fond of lines that time has left behind.
