If there is to be any common life and corporate action, there must be agreement, spoken or unspoken, about a great many things. But the term “culture” is not generally used unless the unit concerned is larger than the family, unitary or extended. Culture holds people together over a span of time. It is received from the past, but not by any process of natural inheritance, it has to be learned afresh by each generation.
