This is a very enjoyable book, tracing the vile depredations of centuries of monarchs on the long-suffering people of the British Isles in language (and logic) children can easily understand. Dickens clearly had little use for monarchs, generally, if you judge by this book. The only governments he seemed to approve of were those of Alfred the Great, Oliver Cromwell, and the United States. Two of these three, you will note, are monarch-free. But he happily (and probably wisely) skipped over the century immediately previous to his era (during which close relatives of Queen Victoria had lived and reigned) and ended with a statement that the current monarch was good, closing with a final paragraph that reads: GOD SAVE THE QUEEN! If Victoria or any of her progeny read this book, they must have been very relieved to read that part.(Reader view)~ Evergreen Book Club
