Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings read as one work, bound by a shared language, style and outlook: that is the idea Martin Noth set out in his Überlieferungsgeschichtliche Studien, and it still shapes how scholars approach these books. Noth's Deuteronomist opened with the law, framed by speeches of Moses, then added tales of conquest and settlement, prophetic narratives and official annals. The broad thesis has held, but nearly every detail is now argued over.
