The story
When the guns fell silent in June 1967, Israel held the West Bank, Gaza, Sinai and the Golan Heights, and for the first time had land it could trade for peace. Avi Raz asks why no such trade followed. Drawing on newly declassified Israeli, American, British and United Nations records, and on private papers, he follows the secret contacts of the two years after the war, with Jordan and with the Palestinians, and traces how each came to nothing.
His conclusion is pointed: Israeli diplomacy was deliberately ineffective because its leaders preferred territory to peace, and the familiar story of uniform Arab refusal does not hold. This is a closely argued, archive-driven history for anyone who wants to understand how the occupation began and why peacemaking in the region has proved so hard ever since.
