The story
Long before it was a museum, the Ephrata Cloister was a living community of celibate brothers and sisters in Lancaster County, gathered around the magnetic and difficult Conrad Beissel (1690 to 1768). This chronicle, written by Brother Lamech (now thought to be Jacob Gaas) and edited by Peter Miller under the name Agrippa, traces the Seventh Day Baptists from the Pietist stirrings of Germany to the founding of Ephrata and its neighbouring settlements in the 1730s, with close portraits of the people who lived there.
First printed at Ephrata in 1786 in dialectal German, it is an early piece of Pennsylvania bookmaking in its own right. J. Max Hark's 1889 translation remains the only full English edition. A rare first-hand source for anyone drawn to colonial America, religious communities or the strange, devout corners of church history.
